Samsung buys set top box company Boxee

Samsung has acquired Boxee, an Israel-based company that sells a set top box that allows users to stream content. Boxee focusses on over the air broadcast HD channels and using its Boxee cloud DVR hardware it allowed users to back up their content on the cloud. The deal according to TechCrunch, Samsung has been sealed for around $30 million.
Reportedly, Boxee’s 45 employees will stay on at Samsung including president Avner Ronen. Of course, considering Samsung makes HDTVs, smartphones, and tablets.
A company like Boxee is a perfect fit for Samsung that lags behind in terms of content. Integrating Boxee with its devices will pack in a formidable product.
The current Boxee hardware is built by D-Link, but it is not clear if Boxee will continue its own hardware, or will just be now offered in terms of a service that will be integrated on Samsung hardware.
Officially the South Korean giant says “Samsung has acquired key talent and assets from Boxee. This will help us continue to improve the overall user experience across our connected devices.”
