Apple acquires low power chipmaker Passif

Apple has reportedly acquired Passif, a Silicon Valley based chipmaker, according to former WSJ reporter Jessica Lessin. Passif is known to make low-power communication chips that integrates radios that work with Bluetooth LE.

Currently, there is no word on how much Apple paid for the company, but considering Apple’s position in the smartphone/tablet market and its interest in wearable technology, Passif seems to be a perfect fit.
Battery life is a major issue with modern smartphones and any technology that helps enhancing it is a worthy acquisition for a company like Apple. Particularly, there are rumors floating around suggesting that Apple might launch a smartwatch, dubbed the iWatch, Passif’s low power chipset could come in handy.

Already, CEO Tim Cook has talked about his interest in wearable technology items, and it goes without saying that Apple is pursuing this space aggressively.

Reducing its dependence on Samsung is another reason for Apple to purchase such a company, considering the intense competition and tension between the two tech giants.
