Forget agents, soon you can apply for a new passport on your smartphone

The tedious process of applying for a new passport is set to become easier thanks to an Android smartphone app called ‘mPassport Seva’. The app developed by the Ministry of External Affairs, already offers passport-related services but very soon will also accept applications for a new passport, PTI reports

The app, which was launched in March this year, offers users services like passport application status, tracking, locating the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) and general information on various steps involved in obtaining a passport. The app was also declared as winner for e-India public choice award 2013 under government to citizen service category. To further increase its potential, in the coming months the government is working towards adding a new feature to the app, wherein one will be able to apply for a new passport right from the app itself.
“Applicants can soon fill details on passport applications through mPassport Seva app. We are working on this and are hopeful it will be launched in next few months,” Joint Secretary (Passport Seva Project) and Chief Passport Officer Muktesh Kumar Pardeshi said.

The mPassport Seva app is available for free from the Play Store.
