Samsung to launch new Exynos 5 Octa chipset next week, just in time for the Galaxy Note III

Samsung has teased a new Exynos Octa 5 chipset on Twitter, which it will launch next week. The company will reveal more details about the chipset, and nothing is really known about it. Samsung’s Twitter page calls the processor Octa evolved, hinting that it’s more of an incremental upgrade rather than a chipset built on an entirely different architecture.

The current generation Exynos 5 Octa chipset is based on ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture that features four Cortex A7 cores clocked at 1.2GHz, and four Cortex A15 cores clocked at 1.6GHz. The Cortex A7 cores are low power cores used for most daily tasks. The Cortex A15 cores are only engaged when extra horsepower is need as they deliver much higher performance, but also consume more battery power.

So far, we have seen this chipset only on limited versions of the Samsung Galaxy S4, including the Indian model. Its main critique is that it does not deliver the jaw dropping performance the Octa core nomenclature suggests and consumes more battery than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 chipset that also powers some variants of the Galaxy S4.

Samsung will probably ramp up the clock speed of the chipset, and make it even more battery efficient, so that it can keep up with the likes of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset. Remember, Samsung is yet to launch the Galaxy Note III, and most probably the latest version of Exynos 5 will be powering it, at least for some countries while the LTE variant would most likely be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 chipset.
