Microsoft’s SkyDrive to be renamed following a trademark suit

Microsoft has been ordered by an UK court to change the name of its cloud-based service, as ‘SkyDrive’ infringes a trademark owned by British Sky Broadcasting Group (BSkyB). The Redmond-based company will be allowed to use SkyDrive for a “reasonable period of time” till it finds a suitable brand name to replace it.

Microsoft is said to have accepted the decision and won’t be filing an appeal. It will have to remove the word Sky from all its brands and could be replacing them with something associated its other brand names like Windows, Xbox, Outlook, or Office. The court ruling also involves a financial settlement, which wasn’t revealed by either of the companies.

“We’re glad to have resolution of this naming dispute, and will continue to deliver the great service our hundreds of millions of customers expect, providing the best way to always have your files with you,” Microsoft said in a statement.
