Twitter is the latest company to remind us that we are nearing the end of 2013 by unveiling the top tweets of the year. Like its trend reports in the past two years, this year too Twitter has divided the top tweets across various categories like #news, #entertainment, #sports, #showcase and #2013.
The most interesting among the aforementioned categories is #2013, which shows the top trending tweets and major events on a month-by-month basis. So for example it shows the tweets for the Australian Open in January, Academy Awards in Feb, Champions Leagues finals in May, Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement in November and so on. The Golden Tweets section under this category has some of the most famous human interest tweets including the one about Paul Walker’s death— “It’s with a heavy heart that we must confirm Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident.”
#news category includes top tweets like the announcement of the Royal baby, David Cameron’s vision for UK, Curiosity Rover, Eid celebrations and others under sub-categories like Breaking News, Government and Politics, Science and Exploration and Human Interest.
#entertainment, as the name suggests, is divided under Music, TV, Movies and Pop Culture, but surprisingly misses out on videos games or consoles launches of the Sony PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. We find tweets about Breaking Bad, celebrities joining Twitter for the first time or just having fun on the platform.
#sports has tweets from all kinds of sporting events like IPL, Champions League, Nascar, MLB and the NFL among others. Lastly, the #showcase category has some of the landmark tweets from this year Iran’s Javad Zarif tweeting “We have reached an agreement” and BBC Breaking News’ “Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first black president, dies aged 95,” among others.
The kind of tweets that have trended this past year proves just how far the Twitter platform has reached from being a micro-blogging site where you post your thoughts in 140 characters, to the hub of breaking news.
