Back in June Sony decided to launch an upgrade for the world’s best point and shoot camera, the RX100. It called the new model the RX100 II, and now the Japanese giant has brought the camera to India. It may be a point and shoot, but this is one mean machine and it can cost much more than many entry level DSLRs like the Canon 550D at Rs 42,990.
Internally, a lot has changed. It brings a new 20.9-megapixel 1-inch sensor that has an effective resolution of 20.2-megapixels. It marries this with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonar-T* lens with a f/1.8 aperture which is indeed quite wide that means this camera will be very effective in low-light conditions. There’s also 3.6x optical zoom and Sony has added more to its professional chops by incorporating a multi-interface horse shoe that can be used to add an external flash, electronic viewfinder or a stereo microphone.
With the RX100 II, there is also a step zoom function and the photographer can choose from five popular focal lengths using the control ring – 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 70mm or 100mm.Internally, a lot has changed. The 3-inch display on the camera uses Sony’s white magic technology that adds an extra white pixel to the RGB matrix making the sub-pixel layout RGBW, for truer whites enabling better white balance for the photographer. It also supports Triluminos color output via HDMI and can shoot 1080p video at 24 frames per second. The display also now tilts up and down making the camera even more flexible. Sony has added Wi-Fi, but also has added NFC in it like most of its new mobile products and Sony has updated its PlayMemories Android app to enable the One-touch capabilities of the RX100 II, and also now features an enhanced user interface.
