Nokia Asha 501 gets WhatsApp messenger via software update

Popular social messaging app WhatsApp has finally arrived on the Nokia Asha 501. WhatsApp’s CEO Jan Koum had taken the stage at the Nokia World 2013 to announce that the messenger would be arriving on the Asha devices in a phased manner.

Nokia has begun rolling out an over-the-air software update for the Asha 501, which brings WhatsApp to the device. WhatsApp for Asha are optimized to work on 2G and Wi-Fi, and just like the smartphone version, users can send photographs, videos and voice messages. When someone sends a message, a user will be notified on Fastlane, which is the second home screen on the Asha devices.
Nokia has mentioned that in addition to Asha 501, WhatsApp will also come preinstalled on the forthcoming Asha 500, Asha 502 and the dual-SIM Asha 503. The messaging app currently has more than 350 million monthly active users and the arrival on Asha devices is only going to boost the numbers.
