Viber for Windows 8 launched with most of the smartphone app features

Viber has today expanded its presence to the Windows 8 OS. Desktop PCs and tablets running on the OS will get to use most of the features seen on the smartphone apps, as well as get some OS-specific features like Snap View and Search charm among others in addition to the ability to pin the app to Live Tiles on the homescreen.

In addition to the ability to pin the app to Live Tiles on the homescreen, Viber takes advantage of the Snap View and Search charm on Windows 8. Other features included are VOIP calls, the recently launched stickers shop, and call transfers between desktop and smartphone apps. You can also customize the kind of notifications you want the app to push. This app though misses out on the recently released Viber Out calling feature. But with the feature set to be launched on the Windows Phone platform in the coming weeks, a release on Windows 8 couldn’t be that far off.

“This is the natural next step for Viber following our support for Windows Phone 8, bringing a fully compatible and custom designed version of Viber to Microsoft’s touch-friendly OS,” Viber’s CEO Talmon Marco said. “Windows 8 is an exciting platform to develop for, and brings a whole new set of UI elements and unique functionality to Viber for the first time. We are excited to support Viber users on Windows 8 and this is part of our commitment to wide, cross platform availability.”

Viber currently has more than 200 million global users of which, more than 15 million are in India. You can head over to the Microsoft Store to download the new Viber app.
