Microsoft adds Skype group chats to Office Online

Microsoft office online users will now be able to start a chat while working on Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word documents.

According to PC World, Microsoft says users will be able to continue any chats started in Office Online on Skype on the desktop or their smartphone after the file is closed.

With the addition of this new feature, Microsoft intends to make its services into cross-platform tools.

However, the new feature is not yet available in Excel or OneNote Online, the report said.

Skype’s updated iOS app adds HD (720p) video call support

Skype today has launched an updated version of its iOS app with high definition video call support, which was earlier seen on its app for Windows Phone 8 as well. Besides support for HD video calls at 720p, the new version of the app for iPhone and iPad also brings improvements in audio and voice call quality, an easier to use country code selector and some bug fixes. The update also comes with a significant improvement in stability based issues faced by the iOS 7 beta users.

Major reorganization at Microsoft could see new role for Skype CEO Tony Bates, others

Last week we reported about Microsoft’s alleged plans to undergo a major restructuring to become a more ‘devices and services company’ under its current CEO Steve Ballmer. As a part of this change, Ballmer is said to be considering putting head of Skype Communications Tony Bates in charge of acquisitions and relationships with software developers, Bloomberg reports.

The report further mentions that in addition to Bates, Ballmer may also put Windows chief Julie Larson-Green in charge of the hardware engineering for Microsoft.

Skype for Android touches 100 million downloads, celebrates it with a revamped app

Skype has announced its Android app has been installed on over 100 million devices and to celebrate this milestone, it has launched a major design and UI update to its app for Android to deliver a common set of experiences across multiple platforms and devices. The update includes a conversation-focused interface, improved quality and performance, and will work on devices running Android Ice Cream Sandwich too.

Skype refreshes its iPhone app

Skype has updated its iPhone app with a couple of new features and a few fixes in tow.

Skype for iPhone version 4.9 now offers the free and unlimited video messaging that Skype rolled out last week.

Skype users can record a video message for fellow users who are offline. Those videos then appear when your receipient logs into the service.

The updated app also has patched up a few items here and there, according to Skype.

Photo sharing is now a more reliable process. Audio and video calls should be more stable. And there are the usual unspecified general fixes and improvements.

Skype's iPhone app is compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, requires iOS 5 or higher, and is optimized for the longer screen of the iPhone 5.
